The way the capitals are playing, you may as well put that win in the bank now.

The point of the blog is that the Panthers have historically been so bad at the shootout that we have NOT seen that kind of move out of this team before.

They are playing better. If we could get the defense to start playing full 60 we may be able to keep this going.

If you switched "Panthers" with "Flyers" this statement would be just as true. I'm not sure about the current records, but as of this time last year, the Flyers were THE WORST all-time shootout team in the NHL (34.5%, Florida was 35.1%).

That said, this game never should have gone to a shootout. All of the hustle and forechecking that was apparent in the TB game was gone. They had a ton of horrible choices on the PP as well as the Briere-Giroux 2-on-1. Give credit to Florida for working hard and capitalizing on their chances, but I think the Flyers saw this as a gimme after the TB win.

Love Jon Huberdeau and what a beautiful move he made. I still hate shootouts though. Another hard fought game by both teams ends in a skills comp. Blah.

Everyone say we started the year poor.. we started the year injured. The amazing atmosphere is what won the home opener, after that we just fizzled away. I have said it 100 times: when we get healthy, we will get dangerous.

And you know what? It's about damn time we had draft picks... kids that WE have nurtured, come into this league and play like they belong. We have been so stupid with our draft picks in the last decade, it's to finally see some of them play like NHLers. And we aren't done. Markstrom, Trochek, Grimaldi, Howden, Bjugstad, Matheson... you're on notice, NHL. We're coming for you all!

No but seriously, great game. This is a game that last season we either lose 2-1, or lose in the shootout. I'm hoping Weiss getting his first goal of the season opens him up. The Capitals are playing horribly right now, and a win tomorrow night would be HUGE, especially since we play them again two nights later. A nice little 4 point swing puts us on top.

Jose Theodore... man. I would love to see a Jacob Markstrom/Jose Theodore goaltender tandem on this team. At least for a season or two. He played amazingly last night against a very dangerous team on their home ice. Well done, boys.

Jose gets the marker for this win. Standing on his head in the 3rd period, OT and then denying the shootout attempts by Matt (Can I play the Panthers every game) Read and Big G. Surely making shootout saves is great but you don't win it if you don't score and that is just what the youngsters did. A sweet move by Hubs and a sniper shot by Meuller. Panthers win a shootout? Do my eyes and ears deceive me? Woohoo!

Kuba needs to sit a game. Horrible, avoidable penalty right after the Skille goal. Nearly gave Giroux the OT winner by losing his defensive coverage. Sit him and let Ellerby get back in the lineup.

All in all this was a game that the Flyers had the breaks fall their way but the Panthers somehow came out on top. You had a missed double minor high sticking to Mathias plus the second flyer goal, while tenacious and hardworking by Knuble, probably gets whistled dead 9 out 10 times.

On to Washington where the Cats will need to stay focused against a desperate Caps team. They better not get complacent because their road trip will be a success win or lose from a point perspective. Lots of work to do so get it done!

Yup, Ellerby was just traded for a 5th round pick to the Kings.

So a former first round pick in 2007 is worth a 5th rounder in 2013. Damn depreciation.

Anyway good luck to Ellerby. He should do fine with a team where he will get to play more.

Ellerby was a turnover machine. Petrovic is going to come up, everyone will realize how great a move it was when Petrovic plays outstanding in his NHL debut.

Who's the next Panther to be dealt? I would imagine Mueller won't be sticking around for a full season.

I suspect that if he stays healthy DT will attempt to sign Mueller to a longer term contract. He has good chemistry with two of our rookies- Huberdeau and Shore, and therefore could and should see a sustained position with lots of top line and power play time with constant line-mates in his future. DT is a "players" GM, KD is a "players" coach, and the Panthers were the team that came calling for him. No reason to believe at this time that Mueller will be headed out of town. I would actually think there is a better chance of Weiss being dealt than Mueller. Only problem is that Weiss has at least a no-trade clause, if not a no-movement clause, which complicates matters. If Panthers do not look like a playoff team at the deadline I would expect Smithson to be moved for parts or picks as he has value to a playoff team and will be a UFA.

Any word as to whether or not the Panthers are considering recalling Markstrom in the near future?
